The Sandpoint Area

Bonner County Idaho, Sandpoint is nestled in between the Selkirk Mountains and Bitterroot Mountains. It was first explored in 1809 by David Thompson who referred to the area as "a point of sand," which is how Sandpoint got its name. In 2011, Sandpoint was voted "The Most Beautiful Small Town in the USA."

Lake Pend Oreille

Sandpoint is right on the shore of northern lake Pend Oreille. It is the largest lake in the state and the fifth deepest in the nation. Around the Sandpoint area, it is quite the hotspot for boating and water sports, and as you head towards Dover and down the Pend Oreille River, you will find wildlife areas and many camping spots.

Toward the southern tip of the lake is Farragut State Park, a former military base and a site where they tested submarines in the lake. Farragut has since become an ideal location for outdoor recreation where park goers can go hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming, kayaking, and camping.

Schweitzer Mountain

Sandpoint is also known for the well renown Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, the largest ski resort in the Idaho/Washington mountains. Its runs span 2900 acres of diverse terrain for all levels of skiers, from beginners to the most advanced. At the lodge, you will find popular restaurants like the Sky House, where visitors can have a fabulous view of Lake Pend Oreille.

When summer time comes, it is one of the best places to go mountain biking, horseback riding, and pick huckleberries.
